Seasonal Notes from Ann
Spring 2005

Get outside often and check the progress of emerging plants in the garden, from early buds to open blooms.  Bring your camera or sketchbook with you, so you're always prepared to record anything you might want to paint.  Even a bud might become a wonderful painting.  You might want to keep a journal of the different plants in your garden, noting their bloom times for future reference.

Don't be afraid to make changes to any photos or sketches you use for reference.  There is no law stating that you must paint everything exactly as it appears.  Consider the composition carefully, looking for the most interesting patterns and shapes of light.  Use a small mat to try different ideas out and then make some quick value sketches before painting.  These planning steps will save you time in the long run and usually guarantee a stronger painting.
