Ausable
River
I’ve
been painting again and have completed the painting of the
Ausable
River
that I started for the Winter Seasonal Notes. I recently returned from
teaching a 4-day workshop at the Morton Arboretum near
Chicago
. It was a great group and I had fun teaching again. We experimented
with painting on smooth surfaces, including the illustration board used
here.
PAINTING
DEMONSTRATION
Here are the final steps of this painting. You can see the others by
clicking on the links for winter and summer 2007 below in the archive.
STEP 9
The rocks at the upper left were added and the water was painted in
underneath them. Water spatter was used to create texture.
STEP 10
A light wash of blue was painted over the background.
While it was wet, I painted the foliage using a rich amount of pigment
creating a deep mid-tone. The colors are Berlin Blue, Raw and Burnt
Umber.
STEP 11
Foliage was painted on the back right using the same colors as in step 10.
STEP 12
I lifted trees and a few branches out of the
background with a damp brush. Then I painted a tone of color on each
one. I also cleaned up any uneven edges on the rocks using a damp brush.
STEP 13
A rich layer of paint was applied to the background
foliage and trees were lifted again. These received a light wash of
color in places.
STEP 14
ADJUSTMENTS
More adjustments were made to further model the rocks
and deepen shadows. Some calligraphy was added with a fine point brush
to suggest cracks and textures. A wash of pale paint toned down some of
the whites.
