Seasonal Notes from Ann
Winter 2002-03

Mount Mansfield

This is the season of hibernation and going within. It is an appropriate time to nurture yourself and your inner child; that free-spirited creative aspect of your being. It must receive attention to grow and blossom. Perhaps some time spent in meditation will produce creative inspiration. Take a time out from a busy day and sit quietly for 5 to 10 minutes. Then allow yourself to play with some paint, just applying it to paper freely without a drawing. Observe how it feels and notice what seems like fun and what doesn’t. See what colors you are moved to paint with and notice how they make you feel. Then develop a painting using those colors and whatever subject they might suggest to you.

We often expect too much of ourselves. Sometimes we just need to play and have fun painting. Each time we paint we learn something, even if it’s what doesn’t work. Sometimes a step in a new direction can be life altering. So, be brave and let yourself play, try a new color, paper or technique and see where it might take you. The joy is in the journey!
