Summer landscapes beckon us to come outside and play. Spend as much time as possible enjoying the beauty of Mother Earth. Gather reference photos and sketches to work from. Visit as many gardens, forests, streams and lakes as you can. Experience each environment as fully as possible, using all your senses. Make notes in a journal, or sketchbook if necessary, to help you remember the nuances of each locale.

From The Garden

Consider looking for a new or unusual grouping of shapes and light patterns when designing from flower forms.  Don’t settle for a traditional and perhaps too common composition. Let your creativity lead you to something that is totally your own view of the subject. Allow yourself to experiment with colors too, rather than painting what you think you see. For instance, if you are painting a pink flower, use more colors than pink. There will be numerous subtle colors reflected over the petals: lavenders and blues from the sky and greens and yellows from the foliage. Even if you don’t see them, you can make them up for a more exciting painting. A flower painted all pink is more of an illustration and can be quite boring!

Ann's painting, "Cascading Stream", has been selected for the Montana Watercolor Society's Watermedia 2004 at the Big Fork Arts & Cultural Center in October

Ann has earned signature membership in the Missouri Watercolor Society. The society includes members from every state and their national exhibition has been rated one of the top society exhibitions in America by Watercolor Magic Magazine.

Ann's painting, Precious Peony, was accepted and sold in the Baltimore Watercolor Society's Mid-Atlantic Regional Exhibition in May.
