I always want to clean out the house and garden once Spring arrives and I’ve begun purging materials and books from the studio that I’m ready to pass on. If you’re also so inclined, look for local schools and teachers who might be very glad to have the materials. Why let them sit unused year after year when they could be appreciated by someone else. It is a freeing experience to do this.
Here are some of the paintings I’ve done recently. This version of a favorite local stream is painted on Strathmore 500 series Plate Illustration board. It has a sunny feeling in honor of Spring.
Here’s an older version with different lighting and cooler color. It is instructive to paint a familiar subject in a series like this. Consider giving it a try. You can explore a range of different colors, textures and values to make different statements.
This painting on the same type of board was a commissioned painting. The request was for a stream painting of warm browns and grays.
The same location is one I’ve painted before in cool tones. It was fun to redesign the stream for a new look and size.
This painting of a peony is on Crescent board. It was prompted by photo reference I’ve used before, but one painting was lost in shipping and others were sold. I had never painted it on board before. That made the color really glow.
These other versions were on traditional cold pressed watercolor paper.
This white Iris is another in a series of Iris paintings. The other two have sold.
I enhanced the mingled colors in the center area and reflecting on various petals for added interest.
NEWS SPRING 2016
I will be teaching a 5-day workshop next July 11 – 15th at the Peru Community Fellowship Center in Peru, NY just a few miles from my home in upstate New York. This is open to painters of all levels and will include demos of a variety of subjects and surfaces. There will be a welcome party at my home on Sunday evening, July 10th.
