SEASONAL NOTES SUMMER 2016

Summer is filled with events again for me. I will have a small show of new and recent paintings, teach a workshop and I’ve just completed a 4th digital book. The book is a short one about the spiritual side of painting and how everything in one’s life has an effect on one’s paintings. It suggests ways we can support making better art. I have completed several new paintings since the beginning of the year. A few are painted on Terra Skin paper, which is a very smooth surface, much like Yupo. I like what it produces and will probably

SEASONAL NOTES SPRING 2016

I always want to clean out the house and garden once Spring arrives and I’ve begun purging materials and books from the studio that I’m ready to pass on. If you’re also so inclined, look for local schools and teachers who might be very glad to have  the materials. Why let them sit unused year after year when they could be appreciated by someone else. It is a freeing experience to do this. This white Iris is another in a series of Iris paintings. The other two have sold. I enhanced the mingled colors in the center area and reflecting

SEASONAL NOTES SUMMER 2015

This May I taught a 3-day workshop for the Colonie Art League in Latham, NY. I’ve included some of the demonstration paintings here. I began painting this Amaryllis on the first day and completed it the third day. It has strong lighting that glows through the petals and created a large shadow over the center. I used Permanent Rose, Quinacridone Coral, Berlin Blue and Burnt Umber, and painted in sections. Smaller ones were painted directly on dry Waterford paper and larger ones were wet before painting. Colors were mingled for interest. On the second day I worked on this Crescent

SEASONAL NOTES WINTER 2014-2015

Winter is a great time to devote to painting. The gardens are no longer in need of attention and I have lots of reference photos taken during the year for inspiration. In October I began painting this flower in preparation for a demo for the Vermont Watercolor Society Annual Meeting at the Middlebury Inn in Vermont. The request was for a demonstration of how to paint clean darks in a floral, including the background. I painted most of the light and middle values before the event and saved the darker values for the demo. Here are some steps of the
