SEASONAL NOTES WINTER 2015-2016

Warm greetings to you as we celebrate the Holidays and welcome a new year. I hope the past year has been filled with good paintings for you and that the new year will bring even more. SEASONAL NOTES SUMMER 2015

This May I taught a 3-day workshop for the Colonie Art League in Latham, NY. I’ve included some of the demonstration paintings here. I began painting this Amaryllis on the first day and completed it the third day. It has strong lighting that glows through the petals and created a large shadow over the center. I used Permanent Rose, Quinacridone Coral, Berlin Blue and Burnt Umber, and painted in sections. Smaller ones were painted directly on dry Waterford paper and larger ones were wet before painting. I’ve received many requests for another book on painting flowers and have written one that goes beyond the information presented in my first hard cover book, Painting Close-Focus Flowers In Watercolor. SEASONAL NOTES WINTER 2014-2015

Winter is a great time to devote to painting. The gardens are no longer in need of attention and I have lots of reference photos taken during the year for inspiration. In October I began painting this flower in preparation for a demo for the Vermont Watercolor Society Annual Meeting at the Middlebury Inn in Vermont. The request was for a demonstration of how to paint clean darks in a floral, including the background. Seasonal Notes Summer 2014

Summer has arrived and I’ve been spending a great deal of time in the gardens. I have continued to paint though and will share some results here. I will once again hold an open studio here on Sunday, July 20th, from 1:00 -4:00 pm. There will be more than 200 paintings on view and for sale and guests will be free to roam the grounds and enjoy our beautiful view of lake and mountains.
