SEASONAL NOTES SUMMER 2017

Posted on: June 14th, 2017

Winter took forever to leave us here and spring has been slow moving. On the bright side, all the rain we’ve had was great for newly planted shrubs. I also had ample time for painting. Here are some of the new pieces I’ve produced.

Haughty Hollyhock is painted on Waterford 140lb. cold pressed paper. It has a strong light pattern and I played up the subtle color changes within the washes. A combination of hard and soft edges help to model the shapes.

Datura, on Waterford 140 lb. cold pressed paper has a cool color scheme. Again, the light pattern is what makes the flower glow, along with careful use of transparent watercolor. The purples were mingled with Permanent Rose and Berlin Blue, varying some areas more pink or  blue for interest.

Spring Frenzy, on Strathmore Plate Illustration Board has a variety of textures  encouraged by the surface of this board. Lifting is also quite easy. That is very useful for lifting highlights and modeling shapes. Treated gently the surface is very forgiving.

Turbulence is also painted on Strathmore Plate Illustration Board. I used a limited palette of Burnt and Raw Umber, Quinacridone Coral, French Ultramarine Blue and Berlin Blue. I painted around whites and lifted some as well

NEWS SUMMER 2017

I will be participating in a Mini Workshop series Sponsored by the Central New York Watercolor Society, at View Arts Center at Old Forge, NY, during August. I will be one of 7 signature members, each teaching a one day workshop. The Adirondacks National Exhibition Of American Watercolors will be on display during the workshops and I have a painting in the exhibit. My workshop on August 16th, will focus on painting on smooth surfaces in watercolor. Further information is available on my Workshop page.

On May 7th, my 19 year old boy cat, Kato, passed away after a long illness and much care. We will miss him so! Here are 2 paintings I’ve done of Kato. The first was an experiment on Clayboard. It was a fun surface to work with. Here is a photo of Kato with his portrait;

This is a quick painting on paper in my sketchbook.
