Here’s a way to see the necessity for a full range of values in your painting. If you cover up the last step you might be fooled into thinking there are some dark enough values.  We  must be bold enough to use a generous amount of paint to achieve true darks. They will bring dimension and form to our paintings. Limiting the color in a value exercise helps you really see each value.

A  painting using a full range of values and colors.

Below is a new landscape on a quarter sheet of Huhnemuhle aquarelle  paper, which is new to me. It is a cold pressed paper  in a block that produces lovely washes and allows lifting.

NEWS

Wishing you all a happy Holiday season

 and a wonderful New Year!

I presently have no workshops scheduled. Any future ones will probably be local. I do have 4 digital books, a hard cover book and 2 videos on this site for those who want to see information about how I paint, my materials and more. There is also painting information in the archived issues of the Seasonal Notes from other seasons.

You can view a variety of my paintings on the gallery pages. Many of these are still available for sale. Contact me if you are interested in information about a particular painting.
