Greetings for Fall. Summer zoomed by and was filled with events connected to my summer exhibition at Plattsburgh State Museum’s Burke Gallery. I painted a demonstration in August of a stream on smooth illustration board. Here is the finished painting. During the demonstration I was only able to complete a portion of the painting in the hour allotted. On September 2nd Mina and I were each presenters for the Friends Of The Arts luncheon. I gave a slide show of the steps of four of the paintings in the exhibition and explained my techniques.
This is a recent painting on a paper made of stone dust called Mitz Terra Skin. The surface is very smooth, much like Yupo. The paint makes lovely textures and you can vary them by spraying into wet or damp washes with water in a spray bottle or a toothbrush. This very forgiving surface allows total lifting of color. I used new Gamboge, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Berlin Blue, Cobalt Blue, Prussian Green, Permanent Rose and Winsor Violet. Darks were built carefully by glazing rich paint mixtures with a soft quill brush. This is less likely to disturb dry previous washes. I softened edges with a soft damp brush, or by spraying to merge paint and make it flow. Notice how bright and clean the color appears.
Give this paper as try for a fun experiment. You can find it in the Cheap Joe’s catalog. I’ve only tried it for a few paintings so far, but I think I prefer it to Yupo.
