Lake Champlain & Green Mountains from Studio (photo)
This summer I worked on this half sheet watercolor of our Christmas Cactus, which had a small second bloom period. This is painted on a half sheet of Waterford cold pressed, 140LB. paper. It allowed lifting and some layering. I loved the backlighting and that is really my subject.
Illuminated is painted on Strathmore Plate illustration board, This is a favorite local stream in Keene Valley, New York, near Lake Placid. There are numerous sections of water tumbling over boulders and rocks, but again, the light pattern was my real subject. I chose a cool yellow to represent the light areas and oppose the cool water and rocks.. In both paintings colors were mingled on wet sections of paper and darks were added in the same manner after the first washes were dry.
