I am back to painting flowers to cheer myself as we enter Spring. This is a new painting. Pensive Peony was painted on Waterford 140 LB cold pressed paper. I mingled warm and cool colors over a simple, light pencil drawing. There are a combination of hard and soft edges for interest.

Idyllic Iris is a new painting in my ongoing white iris series. A white subject will have subtle reflected colors on it, which makes it fun to paint. You may have to look hard for them, but can train yourself to easily find them. Try painting white eggs in a white bowl, on a white table cloth and see how many colors you can find.

Opulence is a new piece in my Peony series. It is painted on Waterford cold pressed paper and has lots of mingled colors. It is painted by wetting a section and adding colors, allowing them to merge on the surface. I charged in extra pigment while still damp, for darks.

This direct way of painting creates clean, glowing color. I much prefer this to glazing in layers. The layers can also be beautiful, but there is more risk of making dull or dirty color. The choice of pigments is also important. I used pure, warm and cool versions of blue, yellow and red rather than premixed tube colors. I like to see some of each color within the washes. That creates more interesting washes than flat color washes. I also vary the quality of edges throughout the painting. They are typically harder near the light and softer away from it. This creates movement through the painting.
This close-up shows a combination of edges and color merges. A variety of values pulls it all together.
