Sunrise From the Studio

Warm greetings to you as we celebrate the Holidays and welcome a new year. I hope the past year has been filled with good paintings for you and that the new year will bring even more. My year was busy with: a major joint exhibition, talks and demo at our local university and 17 national juried exhibitions, earning 6 awards. A few of my recent paintings follow.

“Blue Suede” is a departure for me. These were my all time favorite dress shoes, representing many happy occasions. Sadly, I now only wear minimalist shoes, or go barefoot, which make my feet very happy, but I did love the look of those shoes. Painted on Fabriano Artistico paper.

“Racing Water” is painted on Strathmore Plate Illustration Board. It has been my favorite surface for many years. Notice the lovely textures and color. Compare this to the painting below on Bainbridge board. The Bainbridge surface allowed for a sharper and more saturated appearance and textures are more like those on Yupo.

“Converging Water” was painted on Bainbridge Plate Illustration Board. This was my first experience painting on this board and I love it. Lifting is easier than from Strathmore Plate Board and textures are easily made. The paint does not sink into the surface, making colors bright and glowing.

“Audacious Azalea” is painted on Waterford cold pressed 140lb. paper. This surface let me build darks in 2 to 3 layers and allowed a bit of lifting for highlights and smoothing edges. I painted around lights, rather than use masking. Colors were mingled in sections for control.
