SEASONAL NOTES WINTER 2018-2019

Sunrise From the Studio

My fall was busy with preparing paintings for many national juried shows. I also did some garden clean up and managed to complete several new paintings. Some of those follow with brief explanations.

Secluded Stream is on Crescent watercolor board, which allows some lifting and assists textures to form. This was painted with warm and cool blues and yellow browns. They were allowed to mix on the surface and it was completed with glazing.

Illumination, is on Waterford rough paper, which  let me easily soften edges and do a certain amount of lifting. The pattern of light was all important as I designed the painting. Backlighting produced a lovely effect and formed interesting shapes as petals and leaves appeared to merge together. Color was mixed on the surface in sections and darks added before the wash dried. A bit of glazing was added in places.

Harmonious Hibiscus was painted on a half sheet of Lanaquarelle cold pressed paper, which allowed some lifting and easy adjustment of edges. Again, the lighting created an interesting effect, which helped me design the composition.

Azalea, on a 1/4 sheet of 200LB cold pressed paper, also has backlighting and a close focus. I worked directly, mingling colors on wet sections from light to dark. Once dry, I painted the background, mingling staining blues, greens and purple. A small bit of glazing added a dark enough value in places.

NEWS

The past year was rewarding for me. I had paintings included in 16 national juried exhibitions all over the country. Six of those paintings won awards, including the President’s Award in both the Montana Watercolor Society Annual and the American Artists Professional League. I was fortunate to receive the 3rd award in the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society Annual Aqueous Open and Honorable Mentions in the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and Illinois watercolor Society shows and in the American Artists Professional League Online show.
